Overview

A Disconnect Between Students and Career Services

As more job roles demand hands-on experience, the need for students to engage in experiential learning has grown. However, many students don’t utilize university resources to help their search. Career service centers continue to struggle to reach the students they’re meant to support.

I worked with Experiential One to help career services track workflows between students and other parties.

Problem

Many universities rely on emails and Excel to track task sequences between students and faculty. But with career services juggling multiple tools and tracking several overlapping processes, these methods quickly become overwhelming and can lead to missed steps and oversights.

To tackle this problem, I asked myself:

How might we drive adoption of Experiential One and provide a system that helps faculty manage workflows without the clutter?

The Solution

Keeping Track of Workflows All in One Place

After conducting interviews with career service employees, we found that they prioritized flexibility and a focus on related tasks that need to be completed in a sequence. With the updated workflows page, we aim to streamline how they create and manage dependent task workflows.

Results

While the platform was still in development, the feature resulted in several promising outcomes for the platform. After developing the MVP for the feature, we reached out to several universities to gauge interest.

Wins for Experiential One

1. Positive Feedback for Designs

During interviews, all the participants found that the improved workflow feature would improve how they manage their programs.

2. Growing Interest in the Platform

More universities were eager to test the beta for the platform and discussing implementation in their universities.

Unexpected Insights Can Shape the Best Solutions

This project showed me the value of stepping back and exploring better options when new insights emerge. Remaining open to unexpected findings helped us create a solution that more closely reflects how users actually manage their workflows.
